ਦੂਜੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਰੈਣਿ ਕੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਵਿਸਰਿ ਗਇਆ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥ doojai paharai rain kai vanajaariaa mitraa visar geaa dhiaan | In the second watch of the night, O my merchant friend, you have forgotten to meditate. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹਥੋ ਹਥਿ ਨਚਾਈਐ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਜਿਉ ਜਸੁਦਾ ਘਰਿ ਕਾਨੁ ॥ hatho hath nachaaeeai vanajaariaa mitraa jiau jasudaa ghar kaan | From hand to hand, you are passed around, O my merchant friend, like Krishna in the house of Yashoda. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹਥੋ ਹਥਿ ਨਚਾਈਐ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਮਾਤ ਕਹੈ ਸੁਤੁ ਮੇਰਾ ॥ hatho hath nachaaeeai praanee maat kahai sut meraa | From hand to hand, you are passed around, and your mother says, “This is my son.” - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਚੇਤਿ ਅਚੇਤ ਮੂੜ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਕਛੁ ਤੇਰਾ ॥ chet achet moorr man mere ant nahee kachh teraa | O, my thoughtless and foolish mind, think: In the end, nothing shall be yours. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਨਿ ਰਚਿ ਰਚਿਆ ਤਿਸਹਿ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਮਨ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਧਰਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ॥ jin rach rachiaa tiseh na jaanai man bheetar dhar giaan | You do not know the One who created the creation. Gather spiritual wisdom within your mind. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਦੂਜੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਵਿਸਰਿ ਗਇਆ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥੨॥ kahu naanak praanee doojai paharai visar geaa dhiaan |2| Says Nanak, in the second watch of the night, you have forgotten to meditate. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤੀਜੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਰੈਣਿ ਕੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਧਨ ਜੋਬਨ ਸਿਉ ਚਿਤੁ ॥ teejai paharai rain kai vanajaariaa mitraa dhan joban siau chit | In the third watch of the night, O my merchant friend, your consciousness is focused on wealth and youth. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਹੀ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਬਧਾ ਛੁਟਹਿ ਜਿਤੁ ॥ har kaa naam na chetahee vanajaariaa mitraa badhaa chhutteh jit | You have not remembered the Name of the Lord, O my merchant friend, although it would release you from bondage. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੇਤੈ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਬਿਕਲੁ ਭਇਆ ਸੰਗਿ ਮਾਇਆ ॥ har kaa naam na chetai praanee bikal bheaa sang maaeaa | You do not remember the Name of the Lord, and you become confused by Maya. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਧਨ ਸਿਉ ਰਤਾ ਜੋਬਨਿ ਮਤਾ ਅਹਿਲਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥ dhan siau rataa joban mataa ahilaa janam gavaaeaa | Revelling in your riches and intoxicated with youth, you waste your life uselessly. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਧਰਮ ਸੇਤੀ ਵਾਪਾਰੁ ਨ ਕੀਤੋ ਕਰਮੁ ਨ ਕੀਤੋ ਮਿਤੁ ॥ dharam setee vaapaar na keeto karam na keeto mit | You have not traded in righteousness and Dharma; you have not made good deeds your friends. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਤੀਜੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਧਨ ਜੋਬਨ ਸਿਉ ਚਿਤੁ ॥੩॥ kahu naanak teejai paharai praanee dhan joban siau chit |3| Says Nanak, in the third watch of the night, your mind is attached to wealth and youth. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਚਉਥੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਰੈਣਿ ਕੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਲਾਵੀ ਆਇਆ ਖੇਤੁ ॥ chauthai paharai rain kai vanajaariaa mitraa laavee aaeaa khet | In the fourth watch of the night, O my merchant friend, the Grim Reaper comes to the field. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਾ ਜਮਿ ਪਕੜਿ ਚਲਾਇਆ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਭੇਤੁ ॥ jaa jam pakarr chalaaeaa vanajaariaa mitraa kisai na miliaa bhet | When the Messenger of Death seizes and dispatches you, O my merchant friend, no one knows the mystery of where you have gone. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਭੇਤੁ ਚੇਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਮਿਲਿਓ ਜਾ ਜਮਿ ਪਕੜਿ ਚਲਾਇਆ ॥ bhet chet har kisai na milio jaa jam pakarr chalaaeaa | So think of the Lord! No one knows this secret, of when the Messenger of Death will seize you and take you away. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਝੂਠਾ ਰੁਦਨੁ ਹੋਆ ਦੋੁਆਲੈ ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਭਇਆ ਪਰਾਇਆ ॥ jhootthaa rudan hoaa duoaalai khin meh bheaa paraaeaa | All your weeping and wailing then is false. In an instant, you become a stranger. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਾਈ ਵਸਤੁ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਹੋਈ ਜਿਸੁ ਸਿਉ ਲਾਇਆ ਹੇਤੁ ॥ saaee vasat paraapat hoee jis siau laaeaa het | You obtain exactly what you have longed for. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਚਉਥੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਲਾਵੀ ਲੁਣਿਆ ਖੇਤੁ ॥੪॥੧॥ kahu naanak praanee chauthai paharai laavee luniaa khet |4|1| Says Nanak, in the fourth watch of the night, O mortal, the Grim Reaper has harvested your field. ||4||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਪਹਿਲੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਰੈਣਿ ਕੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਬਾਲਕ ਬੁਧਿ ਅਚੇਤੁ ॥ pahilai paharai rain kai vanajaariaa mitraa baalak budh achet | In the first watch of the night, O my merchant friend, your innocent mind has a child-like understanding. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਖੀਰੁ ਪੀਐ ਖੇਲਾਈਐ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਸੁਤ ਹੇਤੁ ॥ kheer peeai khelaaeeai vanajaariaa mitraa maat pitaa sut het | You drink milk, and you are fondled so gently, O my merchant friend. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਸੁਤ ਨੇਹੁ ਘਨੇਰਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਸਬਾਈ ॥ maat pitaa sut nehu ghaneraa maaeaa mohu sabaaee | The mother and father love their child so much, but in Maya, all are caught in emotional attachment. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸੰਜੋਗੀ ਆਇਆ ਕਿਰਤੁ ਕਮਾਇਆ ਕਰਣੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਰਾਈ ॥ sanjogee aaeaa kirat kamaaeaa karanee kaar karaaee | By the good fortune of good deeds done in the past, you have come, and now you perform actions to determine your future. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ਬੂਡੀ ਦੂਜੈ ਹੇਤਿ ॥ raam naam bin mukat na hoee booddee doojai het | Without the Lord’s Name, liberation is not obtained, and you are drowned in the love of duality. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਪਹਿਲੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਛੂਟਹਿਗਾ ਹਰਿ ਚੇਤਿ ॥੧॥ kahu naanak praanee pahilai paharai chhoottahigaa har chet |1| Says Nanak, in the first watch of the night, O mortal, you shall be saved by remembering the Lord. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਦੂਜੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਰੈਣਿ ਕੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਭਰਿ ਜੋਬਨਿ ਮੈ ਮਤਿ ॥ doojai paharai rain kai vanajaariaa mitraa bhar joban mai mat | In the second watch of the night, O my merchant friend, you are intoxicated with the wine of youth and beauty. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਕਾਮਿ ਵਿਆਪਿਆ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਚਿਤਿ ॥ ahinis kaam viaapiaa vanajaariaa mitraa andhule naam na chit | Day and night, you are engrossed in sexual desire, O my merchant friend, and your consciousness is blind to the Naam. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਹੋਰਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਰਸ ਕਸ ਮੀਠੇ ॥ raam naam ghatt antar naahee hor jaanai ras kas meetthe | The Lord’s Name is not within your heart, but all sorts of other tastes seem sweet to you. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਗੁਣ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰਹੁਗੇ ਝੂਠੇ ॥ giaan dhiaan gun sanjam naahee janam marahuge jhootthe | You have no wisdom at all, no meditation, no virtue or self-discipline; in falsehood, you are caught in the cycle of birth and death. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤੀਰਥ ਵਰਤ ਸੁਚਿ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਰਮੁ ਧਰਮੁ ਨਹੀ ਪੂਜਾ ॥ teerath varat such sanjam naahee karam dharam nahee poojaa | Pilgrimages, fasts, purification and self-discipline are of no use, nor are rituals, religious ceremonies or empty worship. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਭਾਇ ਭਗਤਿ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਾ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਵਿਆਪੈ ਦੂਜਾ ॥੨॥ naanak bhaae bhagat nisataaraa dubidhaa viaapai doojaa |2| O Nanak, emancipation comes only by loving devotional worship; through duality, people are engrossed in duality. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤੀਜੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਰੈਣਿ ਕੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਸਰਿ ਹੰਸ ਉਲਥੜੇ ਆਇ ॥ teejai paharai rain kai vanajaariaa mitraa sar hans ulatharre aae | In the third watch of the night, O my merchant friend, the swans, the white hairs, come and land upon the pool of the head. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜੋਬਨੁ ਘਟੈ ਜਰੂਆ ਜਿਣੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਆਵ ਘਟੈ ਦਿਨੁ ਜਾਇ ॥ joban ghattai jarooaa jinai vanajaariaa mitraa aav ghattai din jaae | Youth wears itself out, and old age triumphs, O my merchant friend; as time passes, your days diminish. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
