ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਆਪਣੇ ਧੀਆ ਪੂਤ ਸੰਜੋਗੁ ॥ manamukh jaanai aapane dheea poot sanjog | The self-willed manmukh looks upon his daughters, sons and relatives as his own. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਰੀ ਦੇਖਿ ਵਿਗਾਸੀਅਹਿ ਨਾਲੇ ਹਰਖੁ ਸੁ ਸੋਗੁ ॥ naaree dekh vigaaseeeh naale harakh su sog | Gazing upon his wife, he is pleased. But along with happiness, they bring grief. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਰੰਗਾਵਲੇ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਭੋਗੁ ॥੩॥ guramukh sabad rangaavale ahinis har ras bhog |3| The Gurmukhs are attuned to the Word of the Shabad. Day and night, they enjoy the Sublime Essence of the Lord. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਚਿਤੁ ਚਲੈ ਵਿਤੁ ਜਾਵਣੋ ਸਾਕਤ ਡੋਲਿ ਡੋਲਾਇ ॥ chit chalai vit jaavano saakat ddol ddolaae | The consciousness of the wicked, faithless cynics wanders around in search of transitory wealth, unstable and distracted. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬਾਹਰਿ ਢੂੰਢਿ ਵਿਗੁਚੀਐ ਘਰ ਮਹਿ ਵਸਤੁ ਸੁਥਾਇ ॥ baahar dtoondt vigucheeai ghar meh vasat suthaae | Searching outside of themselves, they are ruined; the object of their search is in that sacred place within the home of the heart. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਿ ਮੁਸੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਲੈ ਪਾਇ ॥੪॥ manamukh haumai kar musee guramukh palai paae |4| The self-willed manmukhs, in their ego, miss it; the Gurmukhs receive it in their laps. ||4|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਾਕਤ ਨਿਰਗੁਣਿਆਰਿਆ ਆਪਣਾ ਮੂਲੁ ਪਛਾਣੁ ॥ saakat niraguniaariaa aapanaa mool pachhaan | You worthless, faithless cynic-recognize your own origin! - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਰਕਤੁ ਬਿੰਦੁ ਕਾ ਇਹੁ ਤਨੋ ਅਗਨੀ ਪਾਸਿ ਪਿਰਾਣੁ ॥ rakat bind kaa ihu tano aganee paas piraan | This body is made of blood and semen. It shall be consigned to the fire in the end. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪਵਣੈ ਕੈ ਵਸਿ ਦੇਹੁਰੀ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਸਚੁ ਨੀਸਾਣੁ ॥੫॥ pavanai kai vas dehuree masatak sach neesaan |5| The body is under the power of the breath, according to the True Sign inscribed upon your forehead. ||5|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬਹੁਤਾ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਮੰਗੀਐ ਮੁਆ ਨ ਲੋੜੈ ਕੋਇ ॥ bahutaa jeevan mangeeai muaa na lorrai koe | Everyone begs for a long life-no one wishes to die. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸੁਖ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਆਖੀਐ ਜਿਸੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਸੋਇ ॥ sukh jeevan tis aakheeai jis guramukh vasiaa soe | A life of peace and comfort comes to that Gurmukh, within whom God dwells. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਮ ਵਿਹੂਣੇ ਕਿਆ ਗਣੀ ਜਿਸੁ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਦਰਸੁ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥੬॥ naam vihoone kiaa ganee jis har gur daras na hoe |6| Without the Naam, what good those who do not have the Blessed Vision, the Darshan of the Lord and Guru? ||6|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਉ ਸੁਪਨੈ ਨਿਸਿ ਭੁਲੀਐ ਜਬ ਲਗਿ ਨਿਦ੍ਰਾ ਹੋਇ ॥ jiau supanai nis bhuleeai jab lag nidraa hoe | In their dreams at night, people wander around as long as they sleep; - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਇਉ ਸਰਪਨਿ ਕੈ ਵਸਿ ਜੀਅੜਾ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੋਇ ॥ eiau sarapan kai vas jeearraa antar haumai doe | just so, they are under the power of the snake Maya, as long as their hearts are filled with ego and duality. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਹੋਇ ਵੀਚਾਰੀਐ ਸੁਪਨਾ ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਲੋਇ ॥੭॥ guramat hoe veechaareeai supanaa ihu jag loe |7| Through the Guru’s Teachings, they come to understand and see that this world is just a dream. ||7|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਗਨਿ ਮਰੈ ਜਲੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਜਿਉ ਬਾਰਿਕ ਦੂਧੈ ਮਾਇ ॥ agan marai jal paaeeai jiau baarik doodhai maae | As thirst is quenched with water, and the baby is satisfied with mother’s milk, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬਿਨੁ ਜਲ ਕਮਲ ਸੁ ਨਾ ਥੀਐ ਬਿਨੁ ਜਲ ਮੀਨੁ ਮਰਾਇ ॥ bin jal kamal su naa theeai bin jal meen maraae | and as the lotus does not exist without water, and as the fish dies without water - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਸਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਜੀਵਾ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ॥੮॥੧੫॥ naanak guramukh har ras milai jeevaa har gun gaae |8|15| -O Nanak, so does the Gurmukh live, receiving the Sublime Essence of the Lord, and singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||8||15|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਡੂੰਗਰੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਡਰਾਵਣੋ ਪੇਈਅੜੈ ਡਰੀਆਸੁ ॥ ddoongar dekh ddaraavano peeearrai ddareeaas | Beholding the terrifying mountain in this world of my father’s home, I am terrified. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਊਚਉ ਪਰਬਤੁ ਗਾਖੜੋ ਨਾ ਪਉੜੀ ਤਿਤੁ ਤਾਸੁ ॥ aoochau parabat gaakharro naa paurree tith taas | It is so difficult to climb this high mountain; there is no ladder which reaches up there. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਜਾਣਿਆ ਗੁਰਿ ਮੇਲੀ ਤਰੀਆਸੁ ॥੧॥ guramukh antar jaaniaa gur melee tareeaas |1| But as Gurmukh, I know that it is within my self; the Guru has brought me to Union, and so I cross over. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਭਾਈ ਰੇ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਬਿਖਮੁ ਡਰਾਂਉ ॥ bhaaee re bhavajal bikham ddaraanau | O Siblings of Destiny, the terrifying world-ocean is so difficult to cross-I am terrified! - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪੂਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਰਸਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਗੁਰੁ ਤਾਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ pooraa satigur ras milai gur taare har naau |1| rahaau | The Perfect True Guru, in His Pleasure, has met with me; the Guru has saved me, through the Name of the Lord. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਚਲਾ ਚਲਾ ਜੇ ਕਰੀ ਜਾਣਾ ਚਲਣਹਾਰੁ ॥ chalaa chalaa je karee jaanaa chalanahaar | I may say, “I am going, I am going”, but I know that, in the end, I must really go. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜੋ ਆਇਆ ਸੋ ਚਲਸੀ ਅਮਰੁ ਸੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥ jo aaeaa so chalasee amar su gur karataar | Whoever comes must also go. Only the Guru and the Creator are Eternal. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਭੀ ਸਚਾ ਸਾਲਾਹਣਾ ਸਚੈ ਥਾਨਿ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥੨॥ bhee sachaa saalaahanaa sachai thaan piaar |2| So praise the True One continually, and love His Place of Truth. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਦਰ ਘਰ ਮਹਲਾ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਪਕੇ ਕੋਟ ਹਜਾਰ ॥ dar ghar mahalaa sohane pake kott hajaar | Beautiful gates, houses and palaces, solidly built forts, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹਸਤੀ ਘੋੜੇ ਪਾਖਰੇ ਲਸਕਰ ਲਖ ਅਪਾਰ ॥ hasatee ghorre paakhare lasakar lakh apaar | elephants, saddled horses, hundreds of thousands of uncounted armies - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਿਸ ਹੀ ਨਾਲਿ ਨ ਚਲਿਆ ਖਪਿ ਖਪਿ ਮੁਏ ਅਸਾਰ ॥੩॥ kis hee naal na chaliaa khap khap mue asaar |3| -none of these will go along with anyone in the end, and yet, the fools bother themselves to exhaustion with these, and then die. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸੁਇਨਾ ਰੁਪਾ ਸੰਚੀਐ ਮਾਲੁ ਜਾਲੁ ਜੰਜਾਲੁ ॥ sueinaa rupaa sancheeai maal jaal janjaal | You may gather gold and sliver, but wealth is just a net of entanglement. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਭ ਜਗ ਮਹਿ ਦੋਹੀ ਫੇਰੀਐ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਾਲੁ ॥ sabh jag meh dohee fereeai bin naavai sir kaal | You may beat the drum and proclaim authority over the whole world, but without the Name, death hovers over your head. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪਿੰਡੁ ਪੜੈ ਜੀਉ ਖੇਲਸੀ ਬਦਫੈਲੀ ਕਿਆ ਹਾਲੁ ॥੪॥ pindd parrai jeeo khelasee badafailee kiaa haal |4| When the body falls, the play of life is over; what shall be the condition of the evil-doers then? ||4|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪੁਤਾ ਦੇਖਿ ਵਿਗਸੀਐ ਨਾਰੀ ਸੇਜ ਭਤਾਰ ॥ putaa dekh vigaseeai naaree sej bhataar | The husband is delighted seeing his sons, and his wife upon his bed. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਚੋਆ ਚੰਦਨੁ ਲਾਈਐ ਕਾਪੜੁ ਰੂਪੁ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ॥ choaa chandan laaeeai kaaparr roop seegaar | He applies sandalwood and scented oils, and dresses himself in his beautiful clothes. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਖੇਹੂ ਖੇਹ ਰਲਾਈਐ ਛੋਡਿ ਚਲੈ ਘਰ ਬਾਰੁ ॥੫॥ khehoo kheh ralaaeeai chhodd chalai ghar baar |5| But dust shall mix with dust, and he shall depart, leaving hearth and home behind. ||5|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਹਰ ਮਲੂਕ ਕਹਾਈਐ ਰਾਜਾ ਰਾਉ ਕਿ ਖਾਨੁ ॥ mehar malook kahaaeeai raajaa raau ki khaan | He may be called a chief, an emperor, a king, a governor or a lord; - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਚਉਧਰੀ ਰਾਉ ਸਦਾਈਐ ਜਲਿ ਬਲੀਐ ਅਭਿਮਾਨ ॥ chaudharee raau sadaaeeai jal baleeai abhimaan | he may present himself as a leader or a chief, but this just burns him in the fire of egotistical pride. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਜਿਉ ਡਵਿ ਦਧਾ ਕਾਨੁ ॥੬॥ manamukh naam visaariaa jiau ddav dadhaa kaan |6| The self-willed manmukh has forgotten the Naam. He is like straw, burning in the forest fire. ||6|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਇਸੀ ਜੋ ਆਇਆ ਜਗ ਮਾਹਿ ॥ haumai kar kar jaaeisee jo aaeaa jag maeh | Whoever comes into the world and indulges in ego, must depart. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
