ਮਨ ਰੇ ਕਿਉ ਛੂਟਹਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਪਿਆਰ ॥ man re kiau chhootteh bin piaar | O mind, how can you be saved without love? - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਬਖਸੇ ਭਗਤਿ ਭੰਡਾਰ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ guramukh antar rav rahiaa bakhase bhagat bhanddaar |1| rahaau | God permeates the inner beings of the Gurmukhs. They are blessed with the treasure of devotion. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਰੇ ਮਨ ਐਸੀ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਜੈਸੀ ਮਛੁਲੀ ਨੀਰ ॥ re man aisee har siau preet kar jaisee machhulee neer | O mind, love the Lord, as the fish loves the water. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਜਿਉ ਅਧਿਕਉ ਤਿਉ ਸੁਖੁ ਘਣੋ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਸਰੀਰ ॥ jiau adhikau tiau sukh ghano man tan saant sareer | The more the water, the more the happiness, and the greater the peace of mind and body. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਬਿਨੁ ਜਲ ਘੜੀ ਨ ਜੀਵਈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਅਭ ਪੀਰ ॥੨॥ bin jal gharree na jeevee prabh jaanai abh peer |2| Without water, she cannot live, even for an instant. God knows the suffering of her mind. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਰੇ ਮਨ ਐਸੀ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਜੈਸੀ ਚਾਤ੍ਰਿਕ ਮੇਹ ॥ re man aisee har siau preet kar jaisee chaatrik meh | O mind, love the Lord, as the song-bird loves the rain. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਸਰ ਭਰਿ ਥਲ ਹਰੀਆਵਲੇ ਇਕ ਬੂੰਦ ਨ ਪਵਈ ਕੇਹ ॥ sar bhar thal hareeaavale ik boond na pavee keh | The pools are overflowing with water, and the land is luxuriantly green, but what are they to her, if that single drop of rain does not fall into her mouth? - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਕਰਮਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੋ ਪਾਈਐ ਕਿਰਤੁ ਪਇਆ ਸਿਰਿ ਦੇਹ ॥੩॥ karam milai so paaeeai kirat peaa sir deh |3| By His Grace, she receives it; otherwise, because of her past actions, she gives her head. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਰੇ ਮਨ ਐਸੀ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਜੈਸੀ ਜਲ ਦੁਧ ਹੋਇ ॥ re man aisee har siau preet kar jaisee jal dudh hoe | O mind, love the Lord, as the water loves the milk. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਆਵਟਣੁ ਆਪੇ ਖਵੈ ਦੁਧ ਕਉ ਖਪਣਿ ਨ ਦੇਇ ॥ aavattan aape khavai dudh kau khapan na dee | The water, added to the milk, itself bears the heat, and prevents the milk from burning. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲਿ ਵਿਛੁੰਨਿਆ ਸਚਿ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਦੇਇ ॥੪॥ aape mel vichhuniaa sach vaddiaaee dee |4| God unites the separated ones with Himself again, and blesses them with true greatness. ||4|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਰੇ ਮਨ ਐਸੀ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਜੈਸੀ ਚਕਵੀ ਸੂਰ ॥ re man aisee har siau preet kar jaisee chakavee soor | O mind, love the Lord, as the chakvee duck loves the sun. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਖਿਨੁ ਪਲੁ ਨੀਦ ਨ ਸੋਵਈ ਜਾਣੈ ਦੂਰਿ ਹਜੂਰਿ ॥ khin pal need na sovee jaanai door hajoor | She does not sleep, for an instant or a moment; the sun is so far away, but she thinks that it is near. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਸੋਝੀ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਦਾ ਹਜੂਰਿ ॥੫॥ manamukh sojhee naa pavai guramukh sadaa hajoor |5| Understanding does not come to the self-willed manmukh. But to the Gurmukh, the Lord is always close. ||5|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਗਣਤ ਗਣਾਵਣੀ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਹੋਇ ॥ manamukh ganat ganaavanee karataa kare su hoe | The self-willed manmukhs make their calculations and plans, but only the actions of the Creator come to pass. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਤਾ ਕੀ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਜੇ ਲੋਚੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਇ ॥ taa kee keemat naa pavai je lochai sabh koe | His Value cannot be estimated, even though everyone may wish to do so. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਹੋਇ ਤ ਪਾਈਐ ਸਚਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੬॥ guramat hoe ta paaeeai sach milai sukh hoe |6| Through the Guru’s Teachings, it is revealed. Meeting with the True One, peace is found. ||6|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਸਚਾ ਨੇਹੁ ਨ ਤੁਟਈ ਜੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੈ ਸੋਇ ॥ sachaa nehu na tuttee je satigur bhettai soe | True love shall not be broken, if the True Guru is met. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਗਿਆਨ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਸੋਝੀ ਹੋਇ ॥ giaan padaarath paaeeai tribhavan sojhee hoe | Obtaining the wealth of spiritual wisdom, the understanding of the three worlds is acquired. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਜੇ ਗੁਣ ਕਾ ਗਾਹਕੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੭॥ niramal naam na veesarai je gun kaa gaahak hoe |7| So become a customer of merit, and do not forget the Immaculate Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||7|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਖੇਲਿ ਗਏ ਸੇ ਪੰਖਣੂੰ ਜੋ ਚੁਗਦੇ ਸਰ ਤਲਿ ॥ khel ge se pankhanoon jo chugade sar tal | Those birds which peck at the shore of the pool have played and have departed. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਘੜੀ ਕਿ ਮੁਹਤਿ ਕਿ ਚਲਣਾ ਖੇਲਣੁ ਅਜੁ ਕਿ ਕਲਿ ॥ gharree ki muhat ki chalanaa khelan aj ki kal | In a moment, in an instant, we too must depart. Our play is only for today or tomorrow. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂੰ ਮੇਲਹਿ ਸੋ ਮਿਲੈ ਜਾਇ ਸਚਾ ਪਿੜੁ ਮਲਿ ॥੮॥ jis toon meleh so milai jaae sachaa pirr mal |8| But those whom You unite, Lord, are united with You; they obtain a seat in the Arena of Truth. ||8|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਨ ਊਪਜੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥ bin gur preet na aoopajai haumai mail na jaae | Without the Guru, love does not well up, and the filth of egotism does not depart. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਸੋਹੰ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣੀਐ ਸਬਦਿ ਭੇਦਿ ਪਤੀਆਇ ॥ sohan aap pachhaaneeai sabad bhed pateeae | One who recognizes within himself that, “He is me”, and who is pierced through by the Shabad, is satisfied. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣੀਐ ਅਵਰ ਕਿ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਾਇ ॥੯॥ guramukh aap pachhaaneeai avar ki kare karaae |9| When one becomes Gurmukh and realizes his own self, what more is there left to do or have done? ||9|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਮਿਲਿਆ ਕਾ ਕਿਆ ਮੇਲੀਐ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲੇ ਪਤੀਆਇ ॥ miliaa kaa kiaa meleeai sabad mile pateeae | Why speak of union to those who are already united with the Lord? Receiving the Shabad, they are satisfied. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਸੋਝੀ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਵੀਛੁੜਿ ਚੋਟਾ ਖਾਇ ॥ manamukh sojhee naa pavai veechhurr chottaa khaae | The self-willed manmukhs do not understand; separated from Him, they endure beatings. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਨਾਨਕ ਦਰੁ ਘਰੁ ਏਕੁ ਹੈ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਦੂਜੀ ਜਾਇ ॥੧੦॥੧੧॥ naanak dar ghar ek hai avar na doojee jaae |10|11| O Nanak, there is only the one door to His Home; there is no other place at all. ||10||11|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਭੁਲੈ ਭੁਲਾਈਐ ਭੂਲੀ ਠਉਰ ਨ ਕਾਇ ॥ manamukh bhulai bhulaaeeai bhoolee tthaur na kaae | The self-willed manmukhs wander around, deluded and deceived. They find no place of rest. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਕੋ ਨ ਦਿਖਾਵਈ ਅੰਧੀ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥ gur bin ko na dikhaavee andhee aavai jaae | Without the Guru, no one is shown the Way. Like the blind, they continue coming and going. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਗਿਆਨ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਖੋਇਆ ਠਗਿਆ ਮੁਠਾ ਜਾਇ ॥੧॥ giaan padaarath khoeaa tthagiaa mutthaa jaae |1| Having lost the treasure of spiritual wisdom, they depart, defrauded and plundered. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਬਾਬਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਇ ॥ baabaa maaeaa bharam bhulaae | O Baba, Maya deceives with its illusion. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲੀ ਡੋਹਾਗਣੀ ਨਾ ਪਿਰ ਅੰਕਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ bharam bhulee ddohaaganee naa pir ank samaae |1| rahaau | Deceived by doubt, the discarded bride is not received into the Lap of her Beloved. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਭੂਲੀ ਫਿਰੈ ਦਿਸੰਤਰੀ ਭੂਲੀ ਗ੍ਰਿਹੁ ਤਜਿ ਜਾਇ ॥ bhoolee firai disantaree bhoolee grihu taj jaae | The deceived bride wanders around in foreign lands; she leaves, and abandons her own home. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਭੂਲੀ ਡੂੰਗਰਿ ਥਲਿ ਚੜੈ ਭਰਮੈ ਮਨੁ ਡੋਲਾਇ ॥ bhoolee ddoongar thal charrai bharamai man ddolaae | Deceived, she climbs the plateaus and mountains; her mind wavers in doubt. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਧੁਰਹੁ ਵਿਛੁੰਨੀ ਕਿਉ ਮਿਲੈ ਗਰਬਿ ਮੁਠੀ ਬਿਲਲਾਇ ॥੨॥ dhurahu vichhunee kiau milai garab mutthee bilalaae |2| Separated from the Primal Being, how can she meet with Him again? Plundered by pride, she cries out and bewails. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਵਿਛੁੜਿਆ ਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਲਸੀ ਹਰਿ ਰਸਿ ਨਾਮ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥ vichhurriaa gur melasee har ras naam piaar | The Guru unites the separated ones with the Lord again, through the love of the Delicious Name of the Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
