ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਧਰਮ ਰਾਇ ਕਰੈ ਧੰਨੁ ਸਵਾਰਣਹਾਰੁ ॥੨॥ tin kee sevaa dharam raae karai dhan savaaranahaar |2| The Righteous Judge of Dharma serves them; blessed is the Lord who adorns them. ||2|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਮਨ ਕੇ ਬਿਕਾਰ ਮਨਹਿ ਤਜੈ ਮਨਿ ਚੂਕੈ ਮੋਹੁ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥ man ke bikaar maneh tajai man chookai mohu abhimaan | One who eliminates mental wickedness from within the mind, and casts out emotional attachment and egotistical pride, - Guru Amardas Ji

ਆਤਮ ਰਾਮੁ ਪਛਾਣਿਆ ਸਹਜੇ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਨੁ ॥ aatam raam pachhaaniaa sahaje naam samaan | comes to recognize the All-pervading Soul, and is intuitively absorbed into the Naam. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਫਿਰੈ ਦਿਵਾਨੁ ॥ bin satigur mukat na paaeeai manamukh firai divaan | Without the True Guru, the self-willed manmukhs do not find liberation; they wander around like lunatics. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਚੀਨੈ ਕਥਨੀ ਬਦਨੀ ਕਰੇ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਨੁ ॥੩॥ sabad na cheenai kathanee badanee kare bikhiaa maeh samaan |3| They do not contemplate the Shabad; engrossed in corruption, they utter only empty words. ||3|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਹੈ ਦੂਜਾ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥ sabh kichh aape aap hai doojaa avar na koe | He Himself is everything; there is no other at all. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਜਿਉ ਬੋਲਾਏ ਤਿਉ ਬੋਲੀਐ ਜਾ ਆਪਿ ਬੁਲਾਏ ਸੋਇ ॥ jiau bolaae tiau boleeai jaa aap bulaae soe | I speak just as He makes me speak, when He Himself makes me speak. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬਾਣੀ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਹੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਾ ਹੋਇ ॥ guramukh baanee braham hai sabad milaavaa hoe | The Word of the Gurmukh is God Himself. Through the Shabad, we merge in Him. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਲਿ ਤੂ ਜਿਤੁ ਸੇਵਿਐ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੪॥੩੦॥੬੩॥ naanak naam samaal too jit seviai sukh hoe |4|30|63| O Nanak, remember the Naam; serving Him, peace is obtained. ||4||30||63|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਜਗਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਮੈਲੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਮਲੁ ਲਾਗੀ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ॥ jag haumai mail dukh paaeaa mal laagee doojai bhaae | The world is polluted with the filth of egotism, suffering in pain. This filth sticks to them because of their love of duality. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਮਲੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਧੋਤੀ ਕਿਵੈ ਨ ਉਤਰੈ ਜੇ ਸਉ ਤੀਰਥ ਨਾਇ ॥ mal haumai dhotee kivai na utarai je sau teerath naae | This filth of egotism cannot be washed away, even by taking cleansing baths at hundreds of sacred shrines. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵਦੇ ਦੂਣੀ ਮਲੁ ਲਾਗੀ ਆਇ ॥ bahu bidh karam kamaavade doonee mal laagee aae | Performing all sorts of rituals, people are smeared with twice as much filth. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਪੜਿਐ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਉਤਰੈ ਪੂਛਹੁ ਗਿਆਨੀਆ ਜਾਇ ॥੧॥ parriai mail na utarai poochhahu giaaneea jaae |1| This filth is not removed by studying. Go ahead, and ask the wise ones. ||1|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਸਰਣਿ ਆਵੈ ਤਾ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹੋਇ ॥ man mere gur saran aavai taa niramal hoe | O my mind, coming to the Sanctuary of the Guru, you shall become immaculate and pure. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਥਕੇ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਸਕੀ ਧੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ manamukh har har kar thake mail na sakee dhoe |1| rahaau | The self-willed manmukhs have grown weary of chanting the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, but their filth cannot be removed. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਮਨਿ ਮੈਲੈ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾਇ ॥ man mailai bhagat na hovee naam na paaeaa jaae | With a polluted mind, devotional service cannot be performed, and the Naam, the Name of the Lord, cannot be obtained. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਮੈਲੇ ਮੈਲੇ ਮੁਏ ਜਾਸਨਿ ਪਤਿ ਗਵਾਇ ॥ manamukh maile maile mue jaasan pat gavaae | The filthy, self-willed manmukhs die in filth, and they depart in disgrace. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਮਲੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਜਾਇ ਸਮਾਇ ॥ gur parasaadee man vasai mal haumai jaae samaae | By Guru’s Grace, the Lord comes to abide in the mind, and the filth of egotism is dispelled. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਜਿਉ ਅੰਧੇਰੈ ਦੀਪਕੁ ਬਾਲੀਐ ਤਿਉ ਗੁਰ ਗਿਆਨਿ ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ਤਜਾਇ ॥੨॥ jiau andherai deepak baaleeai tiau gur giaan agiaan tajaae |2| Like a lamp lit in the darkness, the spiritual wisdom of the Guru dispels ignorance. ||2|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਹਮ ਕੀਆ ਹਮ ਕਰਹਗੇ ਹਮ ਮੂਰਖ ਗਾਵਾਰ ॥ ham keea ham karahage ham moorakh gaavaar | “I have done this, and I will do that” - I am an idiotic fool for saying this! - Guru Amardas Ji

ਕਰਣੈ ਵਾਲਾ ਵਿਸਰਿਆ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥ karanai vaalaa visariaa doojai bhaae piaar | I have forgotten the Doer of all; I am caught in the love of duality. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਮਾਇਆ ਜੇਵਡੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਨਹੀ ਸਭਿ ਭਵਿ ਥਕੇ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥ maaeaa jevadd dukh nahee sabh bhav thake sansaar | There is no pain as great as the pain of Maya; it drives people to wander all around the world, until they become exhausted. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਉਰ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੩॥ guramatee sukh paaeeai sach naam ur dhaar |3| Through the Guru’s Teachings, peace is found, with the True Name enshrined in the heart. ||3|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਮੇਲੇ ਸੋ ਮਿਲੈ ਹਉ ਤਿਸੁ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੈ ਜਾਉ ॥ jis no mele so milai hau tis balihaarai jaau | I am a sacrifice to those who meet and merge with the Lord. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਏ ਮਨ ਭਗਤੀ ਰਤਿਆ ਸਚੁ ਬਾਣੀ ਨਿਜ ਥਾਉ ॥ e man bhagatee ratiaa sach baanee nij thaau | This mind is attuned to devotional worship; through the True Word of Gurbani, it finds its own home. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਮਨਿ ਰਤੇ ਜਿਹਵਾ ਰਤੀ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਸਚੇ ਗਾਉ ॥ man rate jihavaa ratee har gun sache gaau | With the mind so imbued, and the tongue imbued as well, sing the Glorious Praises of the True Lord. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਸਚੇ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਉ ॥੪॥੩੧॥੬੪॥ naanak naam na veesarai sache maeh samaau |4|31|64| O Nanak, never forget the Naam; immerse yourself in the True One. ||4||31||64|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਮੈ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਬਿਰਹੁ ਅਤਿ ਅਗਲਾ ਕਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਘਰਿ ਆਇ ॥ mai man tan birahu at agalaa kiau preetam milai ghar aae | Within my mind and body is the intense pain of separation; how can my Beloved come to meet me in my home? - Guru Ramdas Ji

ਜਾ ਦੇਖਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਆਪਣਾ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਦੇਖਿਐ ਦੁਖੁ ਜਾਇ ॥ jaa dekhaa prabh aapanaa prabh dekhiai dukh jaae | When I see my God, seeing God Himself, my pain is taken away. - Guru Ramdas Ji

ਜਾਇ ਪੁਛਾ ਤਿਨ ਸਜਣਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਕਿਤੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥੧॥ jaae puchhaa tin sajanaa prabh kit bidh milai milaae |1| I go and ask my friends, “How can I meet and merge with God?” ||1|| - Guru Ramdas Ji

ਮੇਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਾ ਮੈ ਤੁਝ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥ mere satiguraa mai tujh bin avar na koe | O my True Guru, without You I have no other at all. - Guru Ramdas Ji

ਹਮ ਮੂਰਖ ਮੁਗਧ ਸਰਣਾਗਤੀ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਮੇਲੇ ਹਰਿ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ ham moorakh mugadh saranaagatee kar kirapaa mele har soe |1| rahaau | I am foolish and ignorant; I seek Your Sanctuary. Please be Merciful and unite me with the Lord. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Ramdas Ji

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਕਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਆਪਿ ਮਿਲਾਵੈ ਸੋਇ ॥ satigur daataa har naam kaa prabh aap milaavai soe | The True Guru is the Giver of the Name of the Lord. God Himself causes us to meet Him. - Guru Ramdas Ji

ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਬੁਝਿਆ ਗੁਰ ਜੇਵਡੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥ satigur har prabh bujhiaa gur jevadd avar na koe | The True Guru understands the Lord God. There is no other as Great as the Guru. - Guru Ramdas Ji

ਹਉ ਗੁਰ ਸਰਣਾਈ ਢਹਿ ਪਵਾ ਕਰਿ ਦਇਆ ਮੇਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੋਇ ॥੨॥ hau gur saranaaee dteh pavaa kar deaa mele prabh soe |2| I have come and collapsed in the Guru’s Sanctuary. In His Kindness, He has united me with God. ||2|| - Guru Ramdas Ji

ਮਨਹਠਿ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਕਰਿ ਉਪਾਵ ਥਕੇ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਇ ॥ manahatth kinai na paaeaa kar upaav thake sabh koe | No one has found Him by stubborn-mindedness. All have grown weary of the effort. - Guru Ramdas Ji
