ਸਤਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਸਦ ਭੈ ਰਚੈ ਆਪਿ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥੧॥ satagur miliai sad bhai rachai aap vasai man aae |1| Meeting the True Guru, one is permeated forever with the Fear of God, who Himself comes to dwell within the mind. ||1|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਭਾਈ ਰੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੂਝੈ ਕੋਇ ॥ bhaaee re guramukh boojhai koe | O Siblings of Destiny, one who becomes Gurmukh and understands this is very rare. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵਣੇ ਜਨਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਖੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ bin boojhe karam kamaavane janam padaarath khoe |1| rahaau | To act without understanding is to lose the treasure of this human life. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਜਿਨੀ ਚਾਖਿਆ ਤਿਨੀ ਸਾਦੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਬਿਨੁ ਚਾਖੇ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਇ ॥ jinee chaakhiaa tinee saad paaeaa bin chaakhe bharam bhulaae | Those who have tasted it, enjoy its flavor; without tasting it, they wander in doubt, lost and deceived. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਹੈ ਕਹਣਾ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥ amrit saachaa naam hai kahanaa kachhoo na jaae | The True Name is the Ambrosial Nectar; no one can describe it. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਪੀਵਤ ਹੂ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ਭਇਆ ਪੂਰੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੨॥ peevat hoo paravaan bheaa poorai sabad samaae |2| Drinking it in, one becomes honorable, absorbed in the Perfect Word of the Shabad. ||2|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਆਪੇ ਦੇਇ ਤ ਪਾਈਐ ਹੋਰੁ ਕਰਣਾ ਕਿਛੂ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥ aape dee ta paaeeai hor karanaa kichhoo na jaae | He Himself gives, and then we receive. Nothing else can be done. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਦੇਵਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਕੈ ਹਥਿ ਦਾਤਿ ਹੈ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੁਆਰੈ ਪਾਇ ॥ devan vaale kai hath daat hai guroo duaarai paae | The Gift is in the Hands of the Great Giver. At the Guru’s Door, in the Gurdwara, it is received. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਜੇਹਾ ਕੀਤੋਨੁ ਤੇਹਾ ਹੋਆ ਜੇਹੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਇ ॥੩॥ jehaa keeton tehaa hoaa jehe karam kamaae |3| Whatever He does, comes to pass. All act according to His Will. ||3|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਜਤੁ ਸਤੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਹੈ ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥ jat sat sanjam naam hai vin naavai niramal na hoe | The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is abstinence, truthfulness, and self-restraint. Without the Name, no one becomes pure. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਾ ਹੋਇ ॥ poorai bhaag naam man vasai sabad milaavaa hoe | Through perfect good fortune, the Naam comes to abide within the mind. Through the Shabad, we merge into Him. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਹਜੇ ਹੀ ਰੰਗਿ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਪਾਵੈ ਸੋਇ ॥੪॥੧੭॥੫੦॥ naanak sahaje hee rang varatadaa har gun paavai soe |4|17|50| O Nanak, one who lives in intuitive peace and poise, imbued with the Lord’s Love, obtains the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||4||17||50|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਕਾਂਇਆ ਸਾਧੈ ਉਰਧ ਤਪੁ ਕਰੈ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥ kaaneaa saadhai uradh tap karai vichahu haumai na jaae | You may torment your body with extremes of self-discipline, practice intensive meditation and hang upside-down, but your ego will not be eliminated from within. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਅਧਿਆਤਮ ਕਰਮ ਜੇ ਕਰੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਕਬ ਹੀ ਪਾਇ ॥ adhiaatam karam je kare naam na kab hee paae | You may perform religious rituals, and still never obtain the Naam, the Name of the Lord. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਜੀਵਤੁ ਮਰੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥੧॥ gur kai sabad jeevat marai har naam vasai man aae |1| Through the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, remain dead while yet alive, and the Name of the Lord shall come to dwell within the mind. ||1|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸੁਣਿ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਭਜੁ ਸਤਗੁਰ ਸਰਣਾ ॥ sun man mere bhaj satagur saranaa | Listen, O my mind: hurry to the Protection of the Guru’s Sanctuary. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਛੁਟੀਐ ਬਿਖੁ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਗੁਰ ਤਰਣਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ gur parasaadee chhutteeai bikh bhavajal sabad gur taranaa |1| rahaau | By Guru’s Grace you shall be saved. Through the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, you shall cross over the terrifying world-ocean of poison. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਸਭਾ ਧਾਤੁ ਹੈ ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਉ ਵਿਕਾਰੁ ॥ trai gun sabhaa dhaat hai doojaa bhaau vikaar | Everything under the influence of the three qualities shall perish; the love of duality is corrupting. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਪੜੈ ਬੰਧਨ ਮੋਹ ਬਾਧਾ ਨਹ ਬੂਝੈ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥ panddit parrai bandhan moh baadhaa neh boojhai bikhiaa piaar | The Pandits, the religious scholars, read the scriptures, but they are trapped in the bondage of emotional attachment. In love with evil, they do not understand. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਤਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਤ੍ਰਿਕੁਟੀ ਛੂਟੈ ਚਉਥੈ ਪਦਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਦੁਆਰੁ ॥੨॥ satagur miliai trikuttee chhoottai chauthai pad mukat duaar |2| Meeting the Guru, the bondage of the three qualities is cut away, and in the fourth state, the Door of Liberation is attained. ||2|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਮਾਰਗੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਚੂਕੈ ਮੋਹੁ ਗੁਬਾਰੁ ॥ gur te maarag paaeeai chookai mohu gubaar | Through the Guru, the Path is found, and the darkness of emotional attachment is dispelled. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਬਦਿ ਮਰੈ ਤਾ ਉਧਰੈ ਪਾਏ ਮੋਖ ਦੁਆਰੁ ॥ sabad marai taa udharai paae mokh duaar | If one dies through the Shabad, then salvation is obtained, and one finds the Door of Liberation. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਮਿਲਿ ਰਹੈ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥੩॥ gur parasaadee mil rahai sach naam karataar |3| By Guru’s Grace, one remains blended with the True Name of the Creator. ||3|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੂਆ ਅਤਿ ਸਬਲ ਹੈ ਛਡੇ ਨ ਕਿਤੈ ਉਪਾਇ ॥ eihu manooaa at sabal hai chhadde na kitai upaae | This mind is very powerful; we cannot escape it just by trying. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਦੁਖੁ ਲਾਇਦਾ ਬਹੁਤੀ ਦੇਇ ਸਜਾਇ ॥ doojai bhaae dukh laaeidaa bahutee dee sajaae | In the love of duality, people suffer in pain, condemned to terrible punishment. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਲਗੇ ਸੇ ਉਬਰੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਗਵਾਇ ॥੪॥੧੮॥੫੧॥ naanak naam lage se ubare haumai sabad gavaae |4|18|51| O Nanak, those who are attached to the Naam are saved; through the Shabad, their ego is banished. ||4||18||51|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੋ ਦੇਇ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਇ ॥ kirapaa kare gur paaeeai har naamo dee drirraae | By His Grace, the Guru is found, and the Name of the Lord is implanted within. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਇਓ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇ ॥ bin gur kinai na paaeo birathaa janam gavaae | Without the Guru, no one has obtained it; they waste away their lives in vain. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵਣੇ ਦਰਗਹ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਜਾਇ ॥੧॥ manamukh karam kamaavane daragah milai sajaae |1| The self-willed manmukhs create karma, and in the Court of the Lord, they receive their punishment. ||1|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮਨ ਰੇ ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਉ ਚੁਕਾਇ ॥ man re doojaa bhaau chukaae | O mind, give up the love of duality. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਤੇਰੈ ਹਰਿ ਵਸੈ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ antar terai har vasai gur sevaa sukh paae | rahaau | The Lord dwells within you; serving the Guru, you shall find peace. ||Pause|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਚੁ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਚੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਹੈ ਜਾ ਸਚਿ ਧਰੇ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥ sach baanee sach sabad hai jaa sach dhare piaar | When you love the Truth, your words are true; they reflect the True Word of the Shabad. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਨਿਵਾਰਿ ॥ har kaa naam man vasai haumai krodh nivaar | The Name of the Lord dwells within the mind; egotism and anger are wiped away. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮਨਿ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਤਾ ਪਾਏ ਮੋਖ ਦੁਆਰੁ ॥੨॥ man niramal naam dhiaaeeai taa paae mokh duaar |2| Meditating on the Naam with a pure mind, the Door of Liberation is found. ||2|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਜਗੁ ਬਿਨਸਦਾ ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮੈ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥ haumai vich jag binasadaa mar jamai aavai jaae | Engrossed in egotism, the world perishes. It dies and is re-born; it continues coming and going in reincarnation. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਨੀ ਜਾਸਨਿ ਪਤਿ ਗਵਾਇ ॥ manamukh sabad na jaananee jaasan pat gavaae | The self-willed manmukhs do not recognize the Shabad; they forfeit their honor, and depart in disgrace. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਨਾਉ ਪਾਈਐ ਸਚੇ ਰਹੈ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੩॥ gur sevaa naau paaeeai sache rahai samaae |3| Serving the Guru, the Name is obtained, and one remains absorbed in the True Lord. ||3|| - Guru Amardas Ji
