ਜਿਨਾ ਰਾਸਿ ਨ ਸਚੁ ਹੈ ਕਿਉ ਤਿਨਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥ jinaa raas na sach hai kiau tinaa sukh hoe | Those who do not have the Assets of Truth-how can they find peace? - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਖੋਟੈ ਵਣਜਿ ਵਣੰਜਿਐ ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਖੋਟਾ ਹੋਇ ॥ khottai vanaj vananjiai man tan khottaa hoe | By dealing their deals of falsehood, their minds and bodies become false. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਫਾਹੀ ਫਾਥੇ ਮਿਰਗ ਜਿਉ ਦੂਖੁ ਘਣੋ ਨਿਤ ਰੋਇ ॥੨॥ faahee faathe mirag jiau dookh ghano nit roe |2| Like the deer caught in the trap, they suffer in terrible agony; they continually cry out in pain. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਖੋਟੇ ਪੋਤੈ ਨਾ ਪਵਹਿ ਤਿਨ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਦਰਸੁ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥ khotte potai naa paveh tin har gur daras na hoe | The counterfeit coins are not put into the Treasury; they do not obtain the Blessed Vision of the Lord-Guru. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਖੋਟੇ ਜਾਤਿ ਨ ਪਤਿ ਹੈ ਖੋਟਿ ਨ ਸੀਝਸਿ ਕੋਇ ॥ khotte jaat na pat hai khott na seejhas koe | The false ones have no social status or honor. No one succeeds through falsehood. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਖੋਟੇ ਖੋਟੁ ਕਮਾਵਣਾ ਆਇ ਗਇਆ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਇ ॥੩॥ khotte khott kamaavanaa aae geaa pat khoe |3| Practicing falsehood again and again, people come and go in reincarnation, and forfeit their honor. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਮਨੁ ਸਮਝਾਈਐ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਾਲਾਹ ॥ naanak man samajhaaeeai gur kai sabad saalaah | O Nanak, instruct your mind through the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, and praise the Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਤਿਆ ਭਾਰੁ ਨ ਭਰਮੁ ਤਿਨਾਹ ॥ raam naam rang ratiaa bhaar na bharam tinaah | Those who are imbued with the love of the Name of the Lord are not loaded down by doubt. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿ ਲਾਹਾ ਅਗਲਾ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਹਰਿ ਮਨ ਮਾਹ ॥੪॥੨੩॥ har jap laahaa agalaa nirbhau har man maah |4|23| Those who chant the Name of the Lord earn great profits; the Fearless Lord abides within their minds. ||4||23|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਧਨੁ ਜੋਬਨੁ ਅਰੁ ਫੁਲੜਾ ਨਾਠੀਅੜੇ ਦਿਨ ਚਾਰਿ ॥ dhan joban ar fularraa naattheearre din chaar | Wealth, the beauty of youth and flowers are guests for only a few days. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪਬਣਿ ਕੇਰੇ ਪਤ ਜਿਉ ਢਲਿ ਢੁਲਿ ਜੁੰਮਣਹਾਰ ॥੧॥ paban kere pat jiau dtal dtul junmanahaar |1| Like the leaves of the water-lily, they wither and fade and finally die. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਰੰਗੁ ਮਾਣਿ ਲੈ ਪਿਆਰਿਆ ਜਾ ਜੋਬਨੁ ਨਉ ਹੁਲਾ ॥ rang maan lai piaariaa jaa joban nau hulaa | Be happy, dear beloved, as long as your youth is fresh and delightful. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਦਿਨ ਥੋੜੜੇ ਥਕੇ ਭਇਆ ਪੁਰਾਣਾ ਚੋਲਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ din thorrarre thake bheaa puraanaa cholaa |1| rahaau | But your days are few-you have grown weary, and now your body has grown old. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਜਣ ਮੇਰੇ ਰੰਗੁਲੇ ਜਾਇ ਸੁਤੇ ਜੀਰਾਣਿ ॥ sajan mere rangule jaae sute jeeraan | My playful friends have gone to sleep in the graveyard. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹੰ ਭੀ ਵੰਞਾ ਡੁਮਣੀ ਰੋਵਾ ਝੀਣੀ ਬਾਣਿ ॥੨॥ han bhee vanyaa ddumanee rovaa jheenee baan |2| In my double-mindedness, I shall have to go as well. I cry in a feeble voice. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕੀ ਨ ਸੁਣੇਹੀ ਗੋਰੀਏ ਆਪਣ ਕੰਨੀ ਸੋਇ ॥ kee na sunehee goree aapan kanee soe | Haven’t you heard the call from beyond, O beautiful soul-bride? - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਲਗੀ ਆਵਹਿ ਸਾਹੁਰੈ ਨਿਤ ਨ ਪੇਈਆ ਹੋਇ ॥੩॥ lagee aaveh saahurai nit na peeea hoe |3| You must go to your in-laws; you cannot stay with your parents forever. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਤੀ ਪੇਈਐ ਜਾਣੁ ਵਿਰਤੀ ਸੰਨਿ ॥ naanak sutee peeeai jaan viratee san | O Nanak, know that she who sleeps in her parents’ home is plundered in broad daylight. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਣਾ ਗਵਾਈ ਗੰਠੜੀ ਅਵਗਣ ਚਲੀ ਬੰਨਿ ॥੪॥੨੪॥ gunaa gavaaee ganttharree avagan chalee ban |4|24| She has lost her bouquet of merits; gathering one of demerits, she departs. ||4||24|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਆਪੇ ਰਸੀਆ ਆਪਿ ਰਸੁ ਆਪੇ ਰਾਵਣਹਾਰੁ ॥ aape raseea aap ras aape raavanahaar | He Himself is the Enjoyer, and He Himself is the Enjoyment. He Himself is the Ravisher of all. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਪੇ ਹੋਵੈ ਚੋਲੜਾ ਆਪੇ ਸੇਜ ਭਤਾਰੁ ॥੧॥ aape hovai cholarraa aape sej bhataar |1| He Himself is the Bride in her dress, He Himself is the Bridegroom on the bed. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਰੰਗਿ ਰਤਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਭਰਪੂਰਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ rang rataa meraa saahib rav rahiaa bharapoor |1| rahaau | My Lord and Master is imbued with love; He is totally permeating and pervading all. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਪੇ ਮਾਛੀ ਮਛੁਲੀ ਆਪੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਜਾਲੁ ॥ aape maachhee machhulee aape paanee jaal | He Himself is the fisherman and the fish; He Himself is the water and the net. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਪੇ ਜਾਲ ਮਣਕੜਾ ਆਪੇ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਲਾਲੁ ॥੨॥ aape jaal manakarraa aape andar laal |2| He Himself is the sinker, and He Himself is the bait. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਪੇ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਰੰਗੁਲਾ ਸਖੀਏ ਮੇਰਾ ਲਾਲੁ ॥ aape bahu bidh rangulaa sakhee meraa laal | He Himself loves in so many ways. O sister soul-brides, He is my Beloved. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਿਤ ਰਵੈ ਸੋਹਾਗਣੀ ਦੇਖੁ ਹਮਾਰਾ ਹਾਲੁ ॥੩॥ nit ravai sohaaganee dekh hamaaraa haal |3| He continually ravishes and enjoys the happy soul-brides; just look at the plight I am in without Him! ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪ੍ਰਣਵੈ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਤੂ ਸਰਵਰੁ ਤੂ ਹੰਸੁ ॥ pranavai naanak benatee too saravar too hans | Prays Nanak, please hear my prayer: You are the pool, and You are the soul-swan. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਉਲੁ ਤੂ ਹੈ ਕਵੀਆ ਤੂ ਹੈ ਆਪੇ ਵੇਖਿ ਵਿਗਸੁ ॥੪॥੨੫॥ kaul too hai kaveea too hai aape vekh vigas |4|25| You are the lotus flower of the day and You are the water-lily of the night. You Yourself behold them, and blossom forth in bliss. ||4||25|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਇਹੁ ਤਨੁ ਧਰਤੀ ਬੀਜੁ ਕਰਮਾ ਕਰੋ ਸਲਿਲ ਆਪਾਉ ਸਾਰਿੰਗਪਾਣੀ ॥ eihu tan dharatee beej karamaa karo salil aapaau saaringapaanee | Make this body the field, and plant the seed of good actions. Water it with the Name of the Lord, who holds all the world in His Hands. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਨੁ ਕਿਰਸਾਣੁ ਹਰਿ ਰਿਦੈ ਜੰਮਾਇ ਲੈ ਇਉ ਪਾਵਸਿ ਪਦੁ ਨਿਰਬਾਣੀ ॥੧॥ man kirasaan har ridai jamaae lai iau paavas pad nirabaanee |1| Let your mind be the farmer; the Lord shall sprout in your heart, and you shall attain the state of Nirvaanaa. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਾਹੇ ਗਰਬਸਿ ਮੂੜੇ ਮਾਇਆ ॥ kaahe garabas moorre maaeaa | You fool! Why are you so proud of Maya? - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪਿਤ ਸੁਤੋ ਸਗਲ ਕਾਲਤ੍ਰ ਮਾਤਾ ਤੇਰੇ ਹੋਹਿ ਨ ਅੰਤਿ ਸਖਾਇਆ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ pit suto sagal kaalatr maataa tere hohi na ant sakhaaeaa | rahaau | Father, children, spouse, mother and all relatives-they shall not be your helpers in the end. ||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬਿਖੈ ਬਿਕਾਰ ਦੁਸਟ ਕਿਰਖਾ ਕਰੇ ਇਨ ਤਜਿ ਆਤਮੈ ਹੋਇ ਧਿਆਈ ॥ bikhai bikaar dusatt kirakhaa kare in taj aatamai hoe dhiaaee | So weed out evil, wickedness and corruption; leave these behind, and let your soul meditate on God. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਪੁ ਤਪੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਹੋਹਿ ਜਬ ਰਾਖੇ ਕਮਲੁ ਬਿਗਸੈ ਮਧੁ ਆਸ੍ਰਮਾਈ ॥੨॥ jap tap sanjam hohi jab raakhe kamal bigasai madh aasramaaee |2| When chanting, austere meditation and self-discipline become your protectors, then the lotus blossoms forth, and the honey trickles out. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬੀਸ ਸਪਤਾਹਰੋ ਬਾਸਰੋ ਸੰਗ੍ਰਹੈ ਤੀਨਿ ਖੋੜਾ ਨਿਤ ਕਾਲੁ ਸਾਰੈ ॥ bees sapataaharo baasaro sangrahai teen khorraa nit kaal saarai | Bring the twenty-seven elements of the body under your control, and throughout the three stages of life, remember death. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਦਸ ਅਠਾਰ ਮੈ ਅਪਰੰਪਰੋ ਚੀਨੈ ਕਹੈ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਇਵ ਏਕੁ ਤਾਰੈ ॥੩॥੨੬॥ das atthaar mai aparanparo cheenai kahai naanak iv ek taarai |3|26| See the Infinite Lord in the ten directions, and in all the variety of nature. Says Nanak, in this way, the One Lord shall carry you across. ||3||26|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
