ਚਾਰੇ ਅਗਨਿ ਨਿਵਾਰਿ ਮਰੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਲੁ ਪਾਇ ॥ chaare agan nivaar mar guramukh har jal paae | The Gurmukh puts out the four fires, with the Water of the Lord’s Name. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਕਮਲੁ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸਿਆ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਭਰਿਆ ਅਘਾਇ ॥ antar kamal pragaasiaa amrit bhariaa aghaae | The lotus blossoms deep within the heart, and filled with Ambrosial Nectar, one is satisfied. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਤਗੁਰੁ ਮੀਤੁ ਕਰਿ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਜਾਇ ॥੪॥੨੦॥ naanak satagur meet kar sach paaveh daragah jaae |4|20| O Nanak, make the True Guru your friend; going to His Court, you shall obtain the True Lord. ||4||20|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਹੁ ਪਿਆਰਿਆ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਲੇ ਹਰਿ ਬੋਲਿ ॥ har har japahu piaariaa guramat le har bol | Meditate on the Lord, Har, Har, O my beloved; follow the Guru’s Teachings, and speak of the Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਨੁ ਸਚ ਕਸਵਟੀ ਲਾਈਐ ਤੁਲੀਐ ਪੂਰੈ ਤੋਲਿ ॥ man sach kasavattee laaeeai tuleeai poorai tol | Apply the Touchstone of Truth to your mind, and see if it comes up to its full weight. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕੀਮਤਿ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਰਿਦ ਮਾਣਕ ਮੋਲਿ ਅਮੋਲਿ ॥੧॥ keemat kinai na paaeeai rid maanak mol amol |1| No one has found the worth of the ruby of the heart; its value cannot be estimated. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਭਾਈ ਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਹੀਰਾ ਗੁਰ ਮਾਹਿ ॥ bhaaee re har heeraa gur maeh | O Siblings of Destiny, the Diamond of the Lord is within the Guru. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਸਤਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਲਾਹਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ satasangat satagur paaeeai ahinis sabad salaeh |1| rahaau | The True Guru is found in the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation. Day and night, praise the Word of His Shabad. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਚੁ ਵਖਰੁ ਧਨੁ ਰਾਸਿ ਲੈ ਪਾਈਐ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਗਾਸਿ ॥ sach vakhar dhan raas lai paaeeai gur paragaas | The True Merchandise, Wealth and Capital are obtained through the Radiant Light of the Guru. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਉ ਅਗਨਿ ਮਰੈ ਜਲਿ ਪਾਇਐ ਤਿਉ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਦਾਸਨਿ ਦਾਸਿ ॥ jiau agan marai jal paaeiai tiau trisanaa daasan daas | Just as fire is extinguished by pouring on water, desire becomes the slave of the Lord’s slaves. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਮ ਜੰਦਾਰੁ ਨ ਲਗਈ ਇਉ ਭਉਜਲੁ ਤਰੈ ਤਰਾਸਿ ॥੨॥ jam jandaar na lagee iau bhaujal tarai taraas |2| The Messenger of Death will not touch you; in this way, you shall cross over the terrifying world-ocean, carrying others across with you. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕੂੜੁ ਨ ਭਾਵਈ ਸਚਿ ਰਤੇ ਸਚ ਭਾਇ ॥ guramukh koorr na bhaavee sach rate sach bhaae | The Gurmukhs do not like falsehood. They are imbued with Truth; they love only Truth. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਾਕਤ ਸਚੁ ਨ ਭਾਵਈ ਕੂੜੈ ਕੂੜੀ ਪਾਂਇ ॥ saakat sach na bhaavee koorrai koorree paane | The shaaktas, the faithless cynics, do not like the Truth; false are the foundations of the false. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਚਿ ਰਤੇ ਗੁਰਿ ਮੇਲਿਐ ਸਚੇ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੩॥ sach rate gur meliai sache sach samaae |3| Imbued with Truth, you shall meet the Guru. The true ones are absorbed into the True Lord. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਮਾਣਕੁ ਲਾਲੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਤਨੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਹੀਰੁ ॥ man meh maanak laal naam ratan padaarath heer | Within the mind are emeralds and rubies, the Jewel of the Naam, treasures and diamonds. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਚੁ ਵਖਰੁ ਧਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਹੈ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਗਹਿਰ ਗੰਭੀਰੁ ॥ sach vakhar dhan naam hai ghatt ghatt gahir ganbheer | The Naam is the True Merchandise and Wealth; in each and every heart, His Presence is deep and profound. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਦਇਆ ਕਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਹੀਰੁ ॥੪॥੨੧॥ naanak guramukh paaeeai deaa kare har heer |4|21| O Nanak, the Gurmukh finds the Diamond of the Lord, by His Kindness and Compassion. ||4||21|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਭਰਮੇ ਭਾਹਿ ਨ ਵਿਝਵੈ ਜੇ ਭਵੈ ਦਿਸੰਤਰ ਦੇਸੁ ॥ bharame bhaeh na vijhavai je bhavai disantar des | The fire of doubt is not extinguished, even by wandering through foreign lands and countries. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਉਤਰੈ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਵੇਸੁ ॥ antar mail na utarai dhrig jeevan dhrig ves | If inner filth is not removed, one’s life is cursed, and one’s clothes are cursed. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹੋਰੁ ਕਿਤੈ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ ॥੧॥ hor kitai bhagat na hovee bin satigur ke upades |1| There is no other way to perform devotional worship, except through the Teachings of the True Guru. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਨ ਰੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅਗਨਿ ਨਿਵਾਰਿ ॥ man re guramukh agan nivaar | O mind, become Gurmukh, and extinguish the fire within. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਕਹਿਆ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਮਾਰਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ gur kaa kahiaa man vasai haumai trisanaa maar |1| rahaau | Let the Words of the Guru abide within your mind; let egotism and desires die. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਨੁ ਮਾਣਕੁ ਨਿਰਮੋਲੁ ਹੈ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਇ ॥ man maanak niramol hai raam naam pat paae | The jewel of the mind is priceless; through the Name of the Lord, honor is obtained. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਿਲਿ ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥ mil satasangat har paaeeai guramukh har liv laae | Join the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation, and find the Lord. The Gurmukh embraces love for the Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਪੁ ਗਇਆ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਲਲੈ ਸਲਲ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੨॥ aap geaa sukh paaeaa mil salalai salal samaae |2| Give up your selfishness, and you shall find peace; like water mingling with water, you shall merge in absorption. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਿਓ ਸੁ ਅਉਗੁਣਿ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥ jin har har naam na chetio su aaugun aavai jaae | Those who have not contemplated the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, are unworthy; they come and go in reincarnation. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਸੁ ਸਤਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸੁ ਭਉਜਲਿ ਪਚੈ ਪਚਾਇ ॥ jis satagur purakh na bhettio su bhaujal pachai pachaae | One who has not met with the True Guru, the Primal Being, is bothered and bewildered in the terrifying world-ocean. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਇਹੁ ਮਾਣਕੁ ਜੀਉ ਨਿਰਮੋਲੁ ਹੈ ਇਉ ਕਉਡੀ ਬਦਲੈ ਜਾਇ ॥੩॥ eihu maanak jeeo niramol hai iau kauddee badalai jaae |3| This jewel of the soul is priceless, and yet it is being squandered like this, in exchange for a mere shell. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿੰਨਾ ਸਤਗੁਰੁ ਰਸਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੇ ਪੂਰੇ ਪੁਰਖ ਸੁਜਾਣ ॥ jinaa satagur ras milai se poore purakh sujaan | Those who joyfully meet with the True Guru are perfectly fulfilled and wise. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿ ਭਉਜਲੁ ਲੰਘੀਐ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਤਿ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥ gur mil bhaujal langheeai daragah pat paravaan | Meeting with the Guru, they cross over the terrifying world-ocean. In the Court of the Lord, they are honored and approved. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇ ਮੁਖ ਉਜਲੇ ਧੁਨਿ ਉਪਜੈ ਸਬਦੁ ਨੀਸਾਣੁ ॥੪॥੨੨॥ naanak te mukh ujale dhun upajai sabad neesaan |4|22| O Nanak, their faces are radiant; the Music of the Shabad, the Word of God, wells up within them. ||4||22|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਤੈਸੀ ਵਸਤੁ ਵਿਸਾਹੀਐ ਜੈਸੀ ਨਿਬਹੈ ਨਾਲਿ ॥ taisee vasat visaaheeai jaisee nibahai naal | Buy that object which will go along with you. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਗੈ ਸਾਹੁ ਸੁਜਾਣੁ ਹੈ ਲੈਸੀ ਵਸਤੁ ਸਮਾਲਿ ॥੧॥ agai saahu sujaan hai laisee vasat samaal |1| In the next world, the All-knowing Merchant will take this object and care for it. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਵਖਰੁ ਲੈ ਚਲਹੁ ਸਹੁ ਦੇਖੈ ਪਤੀਆਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ har jas vakhar lai chalahu sahu dekhai pateeae |1| rahaau | Take the Merchandise of the Lord’s Praises with you. Your Husband Lord shall see this and approve. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
