ਅੰਤਰ ਕੀ ਗਤਿ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲੀਐ ਸੰਕ ਉਤਾਰਿ ॥ antar kee gat jaaneeai gur mileeai sank utaar | Know the state of your inner being; meet with the Guru and get rid of your skepticism. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮੁਇਆ ਜਿਤੁ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਈਐ ਤਿਤੁ ਜੀਵਦਿਆ ਮਰੁ ਮਾਰਿ ॥ mueaa jit ghar jaaeeai tith jeevadiaa mar maar | To reach your True Home after you die, you must conquer death while you are still alive. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਨਹਦ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਹਾਵਣੇ ਪਾਈਐ ਗੁਰ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥੨॥ anahad sabad suhaavane paaeeai gur veechaar |2| The beautiful, Unstruck Sound of the Shabad is obtained, contemplating the Guru. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਨਹਦ ਬਾਣੀ ਪਾਈਐ ਤਹ ਹਉਮੈ ਹੋਇ ਬਿਨਾਸੁ ॥ anahad baanee paaeeai teh haumai hoe binaas | The Unstruck Melody of Gurbani is obtained, and egotism is eliminated. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਤਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਹਉ ਸਦ ਕੁਰਬਾਣੈ ਤਾਸੁ ॥ satagur seve aapanaa hau sad kurabaanai taas | I am forever a sacrifice to those who serve their True Guru. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਖੜਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਪੈਨਾਈਐ ਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥੩॥ kharr daragah painaaeeai mukh har naam nivaas |3| They are dressed in robes of honor in the Court of the Lord; the Name of the Lord is on their lips. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਹ ਦੇਖਾ ਤਹ ਰਵਿ ਰਹੇ ਸਿਵ ਸਕਤੀ ਕਾ ਮੇਲੁ ॥ jeh dekhaa teh rav rahe siv sakatee kaa mel | Wherever I look, I see the Lord pervading there, in the union of Shiva and Shakti, of consciousness and matter. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤ੍ਰਿਹੁ ਗੁਣ ਬੰਧੀ ਦੇਹੁਰੀ ਜੋ ਆਇਆ ਜਗਿ ਸੋ ਖੇਲੁ ॥ trihu gun bandhee dehuree jo aaeaa jag so khel | The three qualities hold the body in bondage; whoever comes into the world is subject to their play. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਵਿਜੋਗੀ ਦੁਖਿ ਵਿਛੁੜੇ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਲਹਹਿ ਨ ਮੇਲੁ ॥੪॥ vijogee dukh vichhurre manamukh laheh na mel |4| Those who separate themselves from the Lord wander lost in misery. The self-willed manmukhs do not attain union with Him. ||4|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਨੁ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਘਰਿ ਵਸੈ ਸਚ ਭੈ ਰਾਤਾ ਹੋਇ ॥ man bairaagee ghar vasai sach bhai raataa hoe | If the mind becomes balanced and detached, and comes to dwell in its own true home, imbued with the Fear of God, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗਿਆਨ ਮਹਾਰਸੁ ਭੋਗਵੈ ਬਾਹੁੜਿ ਭੂਖ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥ giaan mahaaras bhogavai baahurr bhookh na hoe | then it enjoys the essence of supreme spiritual wisdom; it shall never feel hunger again. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਰਿ ਮਿਲੁ ਭੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥੫॥੧੮॥ naanak ihu man maar mil bhee fir dukh na hoe |5|18| O Nanak, conquer and subdue this mind; meet with the Lord, and you shall never again suffer in pain. ||5||18|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਏਹੁ ਮਨੋ ਮੂਰਖੁ ਲੋਭੀਆ ਲੋਭੇ ਲਗਾ ਲੋੁਭਾਨੁ ॥ ehu mano moorakh lobheea lobhe lagaa luobhaan | This foolish mind is greedy; through greed, it becomes even more attached to greed. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਬਦਿ ਨ ਭੀਜੈ ਸਾਕਤਾ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਆਵਨੁ ਜਾਨੁ ॥ sabad na bheejai saakataa duramat aavan jaan | The evil-minded shaaktas, the faithless cynics, are not attuned to the Shabad; they come and go in reincarnation. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਾਧੂ ਸਤਗੁਰੁ ਜੇ ਮਿਲੈ ਤਾ ਪਾਈਐ ਗੁਣੀ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ॥੧॥ saadhoo satagur je milai taa paaeeai gunee nidhaan |1| One who meets with the Holy True Guru finds the Treasure of Excellence. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਨ ਰੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਛੋਡਿ ਗੁਮਾਨੁ ॥ man re haumai chhodd gumaan | O mind, renounce your egotistical pride. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਸਰਵਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਤੂ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਮਾਨੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ har gur saravar sev too paaveh daragah maan |1| rahaau | Serve the Lord, the Guru, the Sacred Pool, and you shall be honored in the Court of the Lord. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਰਾਤਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਧਨੁ ਜਾਨੁ ॥ raam naam jap dinas raat guramukh har dhan jaan | Chant the Name of the Lord day and night; become Gurmukh, and know the Wealth of the Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਭਿ ਸੁਖ ਹਰਿ ਰਸ ਭੋਗਣੇ ਸੰਤ ਸਭਾ ਮਿਲਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ॥ sabh sukh har ras bhogane sant sabhaa mil giaan | All comforts and peace, and the Essence of the Lord, are enjoyed by acquiring spiritual wisdom in the Society of the Saints. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਿਤਿ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਸਤਗੁਰਿ ਦੀਆ ਨਾਮੁ ॥੨॥ nit ahinis har prabh seviaa satagur deea naam |2| Day and night, continually serve the Lord God; the True Guru has given the Naam. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕੂਕਰ ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਈਐ ਗੁਰ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਪਚੈ ਪਚਾਨੁ ॥ kookar koorr kamaaeeai gur nindaa pachai pachaan | Those who practice falsehood are dogs; those who slander the Guru shall burn in their own fire. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਭਰਮੇ ਭੂਲਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਘਣੋ ਜਮੁ ਮਾਰਿ ਕਰੈ ਖੁਲਹਾਨੁ ॥ bharame bhoolaa dukh ghano jam maar karai khulahaan | They wander lost and confused, deceived by doubt, suffering in terrible pain. The Messenger of Death shall beat them to a pulp. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਸੁਭਾਨੁ ॥੩॥ manamukh sukh na paaeeai guramukh sukh subhaan |3| The self-willed manmukhs find no peace, while the Gurmukhs are wondrously joyful. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਐਥੈ ਧੰਧੁ ਪਿਟਾਈਐ ਸਚੁ ਲਿਖਤੁ ਪਰਵਾਨੁ ॥ aithai dhandh pittaaeeai sach likhat paravaan | In this world, people are engrossed in false pursuits, but in the world hereafter, only the account of your true actions is accepted. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਸਜਣੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਦਾ ਗੁਰ ਕਰਣੀ ਪਰਧਾਨੁ ॥ har sajan gur sevadaa gur karanee paradhaan | The Guru serves the Lord, His Intimate Friend. The Guru’s actions are supremely exalted. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਕਰਮਿ ਸਚੈ ਨੀਸਾਣੁ ॥੪॥੧੯॥ naanak naam na veesarai karam sachai neesaan |4|19| O Nanak, never forget the Naam, the Name of the Lord; the True Lord shall bless you with His Mark of Grace. ||4||19|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਇਕੁ ਤਿਲੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਰੋਗੁ ਵਡਾ ਮਨ ਮਾਹਿ ॥ eik til piaaraa veesarai rog vaddaa man maeh | Forgetting the Beloved, even for a moment, the mind is afflicted with terrible diseases. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਿਉ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਜਾ ਹਰਿ ਨ ਵਸੈ ਮਨ ਮਾਹਿ ॥ kiau daragah pat paaeeai jaa har na vasai man maeh | How can honor be attained in His Court, if the Lord does not dwell in the mind? - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਅਗਨਿ ਮਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਮਾਹਿ ॥੧॥ gur miliai sukh paaeeai agan marai gun maeh |1| Meeting with the Guru, peace is found. The fire is extinguished in His Glorious Praises. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਨ ਰੇ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਸਾਰਿ ॥ man re ahinis har gun saar | O mind, enshrine the Praises of the Lord, day and night. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਨ ਖਿਨੁ ਪਲੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਤੇ ਜਨ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ jin khin pal naam na veesarai te jan virale sansaar |1| rahaau | One who does not forget the Naam, for a moment or even an instant-how rare is such a person in this world! ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲਾਈਐ ਸੁਰਤੀ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸੰਜੋਗੁ ॥ jotee jot milaaeeai suratee surat sanjog | When one’s light merges into the Light, and one’s intuitive consciousness is joined with the Intuitive Consciousness, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹਿੰਸਾ ਹਉਮੈ ਗਤੁ ਗਏ ਨਾਹੀ ਸਹਸਾ ਸੋਗੁ ॥ hinsaa haumai gat ge naahee sahasaa sog | then one’s cruel and violent instincts and egotism depart, and skepticism and sorrow are taken away. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਿਸੁ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਮੇਲੇ ਗੁਰੁ ਸੰਜੋਗੁ ॥੨॥ guramukh jis har man vasai tis mele gur sanjog |2| The Lord abides within the mind of the Gurmukh, who merges in the Lord’s Union, through the Guru. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਾਇਆ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਜੇ ਕਰੀ ਭੋਗੇ ਭੋਗਣਹਾਰੁ ॥ kaaeaa kaaman je karee bhoge bhoganahaar | If I surrender my body like a bride, the Enjoyer will enjoy me. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤਿਸੁ ਸਿਉ ਨੇਹੁ ਨ ਕੀਜਈ ਜੋ ਦੀਸੈ ਚਲਣਹਾਰੁ ॥ tis siau nehu na keejee jo deesai chalanahaar | Do not make love with one who is just a passing show. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਵਹਿ ਸੋਹਾਗਣੀ ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੇਜ ਭਤਾਰੁ ॥੩॥ guramukh raveh sohaaganee so prabh sej bhataar |3| The Gurmukh is ravished like the pure and happy bride on the Bed of God, her Husband. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
