ਸੁਣਹਿ ਵਖਾਣਹਿ ਜੇਤੜੇ ਹਉ ਤਿਨ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੈ ਜਾਉ ॥ suneh vakhaaneh jetarre hau tin balihaarai jaau | I am a sacrifice to those who hear and chant the True Name. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤਾ ਮਨੁ ਖੀਵਾ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਜਾ ਮਹਲੀ ਪਾਏ ਥਾਉ ॥੨॥ taa man kheevaa jaaneeai jaa mahalee paae thaau |2| Only one who obtains a room in the Mansion of the Lord’s Presence is deemed to be truly intoxicated. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਉ ਨੀਰੁ ਚੰਗਿਆਈਆ ਸਤੁ ਪਰਮਲੁ ਤਨਿ ਵਾਸੁ ॥ naau neer changiaaeea sat paramal tan vaas | Bathe in the waters of Goodness and apply the scented oil of Truth to your body, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤਾ ਮੁਖੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਉਜਲਾ ਲਖ ਦਾਤੀ ਇਕ ਦਾਤਿ ॥ taa mukh hovai ujalaa lakh daatee ik daat | and your face shall become radiant. This is the gift of 100,000 gifts. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਦੂਖ ਤਿਸੈ ਪਹਿ ਆਖੀਅਹਿ ਸੂਖ ਜਿਸੈ ਹੀ ਪਾਸਿ ॥੩॥ dookh tisai peh aakheeeh sookh jisai hee paas |3| Tell your troubles to the One who is the Source of all comfort. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸੋ ਕਿਉ ਮਨਹੁ ਵਿਸਾਰੀਐ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਜੀਅ ਪਰਾਣ ॥ so kiau manahu visaareeai jaa ke jeea paraan | How can you forget the One who created your soul, and the praanaa, the breath of life? - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤਿਸੁ ਵਿਣੁ ਸਭੁ ਅਪਵਿਤ੍ਰੁ ਹੈ ਜੇਤਾ ਪੈਨਣੁ ਖਾਣੁ ॥ tis vin sabh apavitru hai jetaa painan khaan | Without Him, all that we wear and eat is impure. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹੋਰਿ ਗਲਾਂ ਸਭਿ ਕੂੜੀਆ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥੪॥੫॥ hor galaan sabh koorreea tudh bhaavai paravaan |4|5| Everything else is false. Whatever pleases Your Will is acceptable. ||4||5|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਜਾਲਿ ਮੋਹੁ ਘਸਿ ਮਸੁ ਕਰਿ ਮਤਿ ਕਾਗਦੁ ਕਰਿ ਸਾਰੁ ॥ jaal mohu ghas mas kar mat kaagad kar saar | Burn emotional attachment, and grind it into ink. Transform your intelligence into the purest of paper. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਭਾਉ ਕਲਮ ਕਰਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਲੇਖਾਰੀ ਗੁਰ ਪੁਛਿ ਲਿਖੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥ bhaau kalam kar chit lekhaaree gur puchh likh beechaar | Make the love of the Lord your pen, and let your consciousness be the scribe. Then, seek the Guru’s Instructions, and record these deliberations. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਲਿਖੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਾਲਾਹ ਲਿਖੁ ਲਿਖੁ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਰਾਵਾਰੁ ॥੧॥ likh naam saalaah likh likh ant na paaraavaar |1| Write the Praises of the Naam, the Name of the Lord; write over and over again that He has no end or limitation. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬਾਬਾ ਏਹੁ ਲੇਖਾ ਲਿਖਿ ਜਾਣੁ ॥ baabaa ehu lekhaa likh jaan | O Baba, write such an account, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਥੈ ਲੇਖਾ ਮੰਗੀਐ ਤਿਥੈ ਹੋਇ ਸਚਾ ਨੀਸਾਣੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ jithai lekhaa mangeeai tithai hoe sachaa neesaan |1| rahaau | that when it is asked for, it will bring the Mark of Truth. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਥੈ ਮਿਲਹਿ ਵਡਿਆਈਆ ਸਦ ਖੁਸੀਆ ਸਦ ਚਾਉ ॥ jithai mileh vaddiaaeea sad khuseea sad chaau | There, where greatness, eternal peace and everlasting joy are bestowed, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤਿਨ ਮੁਖਿ ਟਿਕੇ ਨਿਕਲਹਿ ਜਿਨ ਮਨਿ ਸਚਾ ਨਾਉ ॥ tin mukh ttike nikaleh jin man sachaa naau | the faces of those whose minds are attuned to the True Name are anointed with the Mark of Grace. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਰਮਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਤਾ ਪਾਈਐ ਨਾਹੀ ਗਲੀ ਵਾਉ ਦੁਆਉ ॥੨॥ karam milai taa paaeeai naahee galee vaau duaau |2| If one receives God’s Grace, then such honors are received, and not by mere words. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਇਕਿ ਆਵਹਿ ਇਕਿ ਜਾਹਿ ਉਠਿ ਰਖੀਅਹਿ ਨਾਵ ਸਲਾਰ ॥ eik aaveh ik jaeh utth rakheeeh naav salaar | Some come, and some arise and depart. They give themselves lofty names. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਇਕਿ ਉਪਾਏ ਮੰਗਤੇ ਇਕਨਾ ਵਡੇ ਦਰਵਾਰ ॥ eik upaae mangate ikanaa vadde daravaar | Some are born beggars, and some hold vast courts. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਗੈ ਗਇਆ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਵੇਕਾਰ ॥੩॥ agai geaa jaaneeai vin naavai vekaar |3| Going to the world hereafter, everyone shall realize that without the Name, it is all useless. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਭੈ ਤੇਰੈ ਡਰੁ ਅਗਲਾ ਖਪਿ ਖਪਿ ਛਿਜੈ ਦੇਹ ॥ bhai terai ddar agalaa khap khap chhijai deh | I am terrified by the Fear of You, God. Bothered and bewildered, my body is wasting away. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਵ ਜਿਨਾ ਸੁਲਤਾਨ ਖਾਨ ਹੋਦੇ ਡਿਠੇ ਖੇਹ ॥ naav jinaa sulataan khaan hode dditthe kheh | Those who are known as sultans and emperors shall be reduced to dust in the end. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਉਠੀ ਚਲਿਆ ਸਭਿ ਕੂੜੇ ਤੁਟੇ ਨੇਹ ॥੪॥੬॥ naanak utthee chaliaa sabh koorre tutte neh |4|6| O Nanak, arising and departing, all false attachments are cut away. ||4||6|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਸਭਿ ਰਸ ਮਿਠੇ ਮੰਨਿਐ ਸੁਣਿਐ ਸਾਲੋਣੇ ॥ sabh ras mitthe maniai suniai saalone | Believing, all tastes are sweet. Hearing, the salty flavors are tasted; - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਖਟ ਤੁਰਸੀ ਮੁਖਿ ਬੋਲਣਾ ਮਾਰਣ ਨਾਦ ਕੀਏ ॥ khatt turasee mukh bolanaa maaran naad kee | chanting with one’s mouth, the spicy flavors are savored. All these spices have been made from the Sound-current of the Naad. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਛਤੀਹ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਭਾਉ ਏਕੁ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇਇ ॥੧॥ chhateeh amrit bhaau ek jaa kau nadar karee |1| The thirty-six flavors of ambrosial nectar are in the Love of the One Lord; they are tasted only by one who is blessed by His Glance of Grace. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਜਿਤੁ ਖਾਧੈ ਤਨੁ ਪੀੜੀਐ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਚਲਹਿ ਵਿਕਾਰ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ jit khaadhai tan peerreeai man meh chaleh vikaar |1| rahaau | Eating them, the body is ruined, and wickedness and corruption enter into the mind. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਰਤਾ ਪੈਨਣੁ ਮਨੁ ਰਤਾ ਸੁਪੇਦੀ ਸਤੁ ਦਾਨੁ ॥ rataa painan man rataa supedee sat daan | My mind is imbued with the Lord’s Love; it is dyed a deep crimson. Truth and charity are my white clothes. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨੀਲੀ ਸਿਆਹੀ ਕਦਾ ਕਰਣੀ ਪਹਿਰਣੁ ਪੈਰ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥ neelee siaahee kadaa karanee pahiran pair dhiaan | Erasing the blackness of sin is my wearing of blue clothes, and meditation on the Lord’s Lotus Feet is my robe of honor. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਮਰਬੰਦੁ ਸੰਤੋਖ ਕਾ ਧਨੁ ਜੋਬਨੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮੁ ॥੨॥ kamaraband santokh kaa dhan joban teraa naam |2| Contentment is my cummerbund, Your Name is my wealth and youth. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਜਿਤੁ ਪੈਧੈ ਤਨੁ ਪੀੜੀਐ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਚਲਹਿ ਵਿਕਾਰ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ jit paidhai tan peerreeai man meh chaleh vikaar |1| rahaau | Wearing them, the body is ruined, and wickedness and corruption enter into the mind. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਘੋੜੇ ਪਾਖਰ ਸੁਇਨੇ ਸਾਖਤਿ ਬੂਝਣੁ ਤੇਰੀ ਵਾਟ ॥ ghorre paakhar sueine saakhat boojhan teree vaatt | The understanding of Your Way, Lord, is horses, saddles and bags of gold for me. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤਰਕਸ ਤੀਰ ਕਮਾਣ ਸਾਂਗ ਤੇਗਬੰਦ ਗੁਣ ਧਾਤੁ ॥ tarakas teer kamaan saang tegaband gun dhaat | The pursuit of virtue is my bow and arrow, my quiver, sword and scabbard. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਵਾਜਾ ਨੇਜਾ ਪਤਿ ਸਿਉ ਪਰਗਟੁ ਕਰਮੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਾਤਿ ॥੩॥ vaajaa nejaa pat siau paragatt karam teraa meree jaat |3| To be distinguished with honor is my drum and banner. Your Mercy is my social status. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਘਰ ਮੰਦਰ ਖੁਸੀ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਨਦਰਿ ਤੇਰੀ ਪਰਵਾਰੁ ॥ ghar mandar khusee naam kee nadar teree paravaar | The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is the pleasure of houses and mansions. Your Glance of Grace is my family, Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
