ਨਾਨਕ ਕਾਗਦ ਲਖ ਮਣਾ ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਕੀਚੈ ਭਾਉ ॥ naanak kaagad lakh manaa parr parr keechai bhaau | O Nanak, if I had hundreds of thousands of stacks of paper, and if I were to read and recite and embrace love for the Lord, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਸੂ ਤੋਟਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਲੇਖਣਿ ਪਉਣੁ ਚਲਾਉ ॥ masoo tott na aavee lekhan paun chalaau | and if ink were never to fail me, and if my pen were able to move like the wind - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਭੀ ਤੇਰੀ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਹਉ ਕੇਵਡੁ ਆਖਾ ਨਾਉ ॥੪॥੨॥ bhee teree keemat naa pavai hau kevadd aakhaa naau |4|2| -even so, I could not estimate Your Value. How can I describe the Greatness of Your Name? ||4||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਲੇਖੈ ਬੋਲਣੁ ਬੋਲਣਾ ਲੇਖੈ ਖਾਣਾ ਖਾਉ ॥ lekhai bolan bolanaa lekhai khaanaa khaau | As it is pre-ordained, people speak their words. As it is pre-ordained, they consume their food. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਲੇਖੈ ਵਾਟ ਚਲਾਈਆ ਲੇਖੈ ਸੁਣਿ ਵੇਖਾਉ ॥ lekhai vaatt chalaaeea lekhai sun vekhaau | As it is pre-ordained, they walk along the way. As it is pre-ordained, they see and hear. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਲੇਖੈ ਸਾਹ ਲਵਾਈਅਹਿ ਪੜੇ ਕਿ ਪੁਛਣ ਜਾਉ ॥੧॥ lekhai saah lavaaeeeh parre ki puchhan jaau |1| As it is pre-ordained, they draw their breath. Why should I go and ask the scholars about this? ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬਾਬਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਰਚਨਾ ਧੋਹੁ ॥ baabaa maaeaa rachanaa dhohu | O Baba, the splendor of Maya is deceptive. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅੰਧੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਨਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਏਹ ਨ ਓਹੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ andhai naam visaariaa naa tis eeh na ohu |1| rahaau | The blind man has forgotten the Name; he is in limbo, neither here nor there. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜੀਵਣ ਮਰਣਾ ਜਾਇ ਕੈ ਏਥੈ ਖਾਜੈ ਕਾਲਿ ॥ jeevan maranaa jaae kai ethai khaajai kaal | Life and death come to all who are born. Everything here gets devoured by Death. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਥੈ ਬਹਿ ਸਮਝਾਈਐ ਤਿਥੈ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਚਲਿਓ ਨਾਲਿ ॥ jithai beh samajhaaeeai tithai koe na chalio naal | He sits and examines the accounts, there where no one goes along with anyone. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਰੋਵਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਜੇਤੜੇ ਸਭਿ ਬੰਨਹਿ ਪੰਡ ਪਰਾਲਿ ॥੨॥ rovan vaale jetarre sabh baneh pandd paraal |2| Those who weep and wail might just as well all tie bundles of straw. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਆਖੈ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਘਟਿ ਨ ਆਖੈ ਕੋਇ ॥ sabh ko aakhai bahut bahut ghatt na aakhai koe | Everyone says that God is the Greatest of the Great. No one calls Him any less. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕੀਮਤਿ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਈਆ ਕਹਣਿ ਨ ਵਡਾ ਹੋਇ ॥ keemat kinai na paaeea kehan na vaddaa hoe | No one can estimate His Worth. By speaking of Him, His Greatness is not increased. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਾਚਾ ਸਾਹਬੁ ਏਕੁ ਤੂ ਹੋਰਿ ਜੀਆ ਕੇਤੇ ਲੋਅ ॥੩॥ saachaa saahab ek too hor jeea kete loa |3| You are the One True Lord and Master of all the other beings, of so many worlds. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨੀਚਾ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਨੀਚ ਜਾਤਿ ਨੀਚੀ ਹੂ ਅਤਿ ਨੀਚੁ ॥ neechaa andar neech jaat neechee hoo at neech | Nanak seeks the company of the lowest of the low class, the very lowest of the low. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਤਿਨ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਾਥਿ ਵਡਿਆ ਸਿਉ ਕਿਆ ਰੀਸ ॥ naanak tin kai sang saath vaddiaa siau kiaa rees | Why should he try to compete with the great? - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਥੈ ਨੀਚ ਸਮਾਲੀਅਨਿ ਤਿਥੈ ਨਦਰਿ ਤੇਰੀ ਬਖਸੀਸ ॥੪॥੩॥ jithai neech samaaleean tithai nadar teree bakhasees |4|3| In that place where the lowly are cared for-there, the Blessings of Your Glance of Grace rain down. ||4||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਲਬੁ ਕੁਤਾ ਕੂੜੁ ਚੂਹੜਾ ਠਗਿ ਖਾਧਾ ਮੁਰਦਾਰੁ ॥ lab kutaa koorr chooharraa tthag khaadhaa muradaar | Greed is a dog; falsehood is a filthy street-sweeper. Cheating is eating a rotting carcass. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪਰ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਪਰ ਮਲੁ ਮੁਖ ਸੁਧੀ ਅਗਨਿ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਚੰਡਾਲੁ ॥ par nindaa par mal mukh sudhee agan krodh chanddaal | Slandering others is putting the filth of others into your own mouth. The fire of anger is the outcaste who burns dead bodies at the crematorium. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਰਸ ਕਸ ਆਪੁ ਸਲਾਹਣਾ ਏ ਕਰਮ ਮੇਰੇ ਕਰਤਾਰ ॥੧॥ ras kas aap salaahanaa e karam mere karataar |1| I am caught in these tastes and flavors, and in self-conceited praise. These are my actions, O my Creator! ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬਾਬਾ ਬੋਲੀਐ ਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥ baabaa boleeai pat hoe | O Baba, speak only that which will bring you honor. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਊਤਮ ਸੇ ਦਰਿ ਊਤਮ ਕਹੀਅਹਿ ਨੀਚ ਕਰਮ ਬਹਿ ਰੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ aootam se dar aootam kaheeeh neech karam beh roe |1| rahaau | They alone are good, who are judged good at the Lord’s Door. Those with bad karma can only sit and weep. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਰਸੁ ਸੁਇਨਾ ਰਸੁ ਰੁਪਾ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਰਸੁ ਪਰਮਲ ਕੀ ਵਾਸੁ ॥ ras sueinaa ras rupaa kaaman ras paramal kee vaas | The pleasures of gold and silver, the pleasures of women, the pleasure of the fragrance of sandalwood, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਰਸੁ ਘੋੜੇ ਰਸੁ ਸੇਜਾ ਮੰਦਰ ਰਸੁ ਮੀਠਾ ਰਸੁ ਮਾਸੁ ॥ ras ghorre ras sejaa mandar ras meetthaa ras maas | the pleasure of horses, the pleasure of a soft bed in a palace, the pleasure of sweet treats and the pleasure of hearty meals - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਏਤੇ ਰਸ ਸਰੀਰ ਕੇ ਕੈ ਘਟਿ ਨਾਮ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥੨॥ ete ras sareer ke kai ghatt naam nivaas |2| -these pleasures of the human body are so numerous; how can the Naam, the Name of the Lord, find its dwelling in the heart? ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਤੁ ਬੋਲਿਐ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਸੋ ਬੋਲਿਆ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥ jit boliai pat paaeeai so boliaa paravaan | Those words are acceptable, which, when spoken, bring honor. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਫਿਕਾ ਬੋਲਿ ਵਿਗੁਚਣਾ ਸੁਣਿ ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨ ਅਜਾਣ ॥ fikaa bol viguchanaa sun moorakh man ajaan | Harsh words bring only grief. Listen, O foolish and ignorant mind! - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵਹਿ ਸੇ ਭਲੇ ਹੋਰਿ ਕਿ ਕਹਣ ਵਖਾਣ ॥੩॥ jo tis bhaaveh se bhale hor ki kehan vakhaan |3| Those who are pleasing to Him are good. What else is there to be said? ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤਿਨ ਮਤਿ ਤਿਨ ਪਤਿ ਤਿਨ ਧਨੁ ਪਲੈ ਜਿਨ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਇ ॥ tin mat tin pat tin dhan palai jin hiradai rahiaa samaae | Wisdom, honor and wealth are in the laps of those whose hearts remain permeated with the Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤਿਨ ਕਾ ਕਿਆ ਸਾਲਾਹਣਾ ਅਵਰ ਸੁਆਲਿਉ ਕਾਇ ॥ tin kaa kiaa saalaahanaa avar suaaliau kaae | What praise can be offered to them? What other adornments can be bestowed upon them? - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰੀ ਬਾਹਰੇ ਰਾਚਹਿ ਦਾਨਿ ਨ ਨਾਇ ॥੪॥੪॥ naanak nadaree baahare raacheh daan na naae |4|4| O Nanak, those who lack the Lord’s Glance of Grace cherish neither charity nor the Lord’s Name. ||4||4|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਅਮਲੁ ਗਲੋਲਾ ਕੂੜ ਕਾ ਦਿਤਾ ਦੇਵਣਹਾਰਿ ॥ amal galolaa koorr kaa ditaa devanahaar | The Great Giver has given the intoxicating drug of falsehood. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਤੀ ਮਰਣੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਖੁਸੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਦਿਨ ਚਾਰਿ ॥ matee maran visaariaa khusee keetee din chaar | The people are intoxicated; they have forgotten death, and they have fun for a few days. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਚੁ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਤਿਨ ਸੋਫੀਆ ਰਾਖਣ ਕਉ ਦਰਵਾਰੁ ॥੧॥ sach miliaa tin sofeea raakhan kau daravaar |1| Those who do not use intoxicants are true; they dwell in the Court of the Lord. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚੇ ਕਉ ਸਚੁ ਜਾਣੁ ॥ naanak saache kau sach jaan | O Nanak, know the True Lord as True. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਤੁ ਸੇਵਿਐ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਤੇਰੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਚਲੈ ਮਾਣੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ jit seviai sukh paaeeai teree daragah chalai maan |1| rahaau | Serving Him, peace is obtained; you shall go to His Court with honor. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਚੁ ਸਰਾ ਗੁੜ ਬਾਹਰਾ ਜਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਸਚਾ ਨਾਉ ॥ sach saraa gurr baaharaa jis vich sachaa naau | The Wine of Truth is not fermented from molasses. The True Name is contained within it. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
